Game of Thrones fans were beside themselves on Monday night, as the self-proclaimed Queen from the south, Daenerys Targaryen, made her debut on northern soil.
Needless to say, the draped silk dresses and breezy capes that had become the Khaleesi???s style signatures when she lived in Meereen were in no way adequate to insulate from the cold beyond the wall (winter has come, after all) and so she required a new wardrobe for the unprecedented occasion.
The show???s costume designer Michele Clapton made a stand-out ???fur??? coat for Daenerys, a striped black and white pelt accessorised with the character???s favourite three-headed dragon chain from the series, designed by jewellers Yunus and Eliza (and available to buy if you are a super-fan with a spare ??2,600).
???It was just extraordinary,???Clapton tells Making Game of Thrones of the coat???s design, which was armour-like in its structure with a high, standing collar to signify the character???s leadership qualities.???We created the fabric in the work room. It???s such a strong look for riding the dragon through the snow.???
???Great to get such a positive reaction to Daenerys coat,??? she wrote on Instagram yesterday, posting pictures of her initial sketch and the fabric development process.???Even better is that it is mostly fake fur and hand made in our own workroom??? talented crew make costumes possible.???
The fake fur in this case was constructed by Linea, but earlier in the series Clapton???s costumes made headlines after she revealed that she had sourced fabric for other fur-wearing characters, like Jon Snow and the Night???s Watch from IKEA.
"These capes are actually IKEA rugs," she told an audience during a talk at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, to great applause."We take anything we can.We cut, and then we shaved them, and then we added strong leather straps, and breakdown which is like a religion on Game of Thrones."
Anti fur organisation PETA had previously been in touch with Clapton when the series first launched, objecting to her use of fur. ???Certain actors won???t wear it and we???ll respect that and we???ll always try to make it in fake fur instead,??? she told The Telegraph at the time.???But when you???re depicting the things that we are a lot of the time it doesn???t work.???
As a result Clapton says she will never commission new fur and has actively sought to find faux furs or, if real must be used for an effect, she will source vintage pieces from French markets. All this, as well as IKEA, of course.
