Claire Foy's stylist on dressing Golden Globes winner and 'The Crown' star in Erdem

For anyone who"s a fan of The Crown,no doubt you"ve already done plenty of cooing over outfits worn by Claire Foy.In her role as a young Queen Elizabeth, Foy has graced our screens in the primmest of cardigans and the most stately of ballgowns over the past few months. But back in the real world, Foy is carving a reputation as an excellent representative for modern British elegance.

At the Golden Globe awards last night - where she was the deserving winner of the awardfor best actress in a TV drama - Foy looked ethereally beautiful in a pastel sequinned creation, which sheand stylist Nicky Yates have been masterminding ever since her nomination was announced."The dressis a gorgeous custom Erdem. It???s made from pink sequinswith crystal featherappliqu?? and has a dusty blue satin ribbon waist detail," Yates explained as Foy hit the red carpet.

It perhaps comes as little surprise that Yates turned to the London-baseddesigner, renowned for his opulent, nostalgia-tinged designs for this special moment."Claire wore Erdem toThe Crownpremiere, so there was already a lot of love there," says Yates."As withthe premiere, we wanted a dress that was romantic and feminine with a contemporary feel.I loved how the dress shined and shimmered on the night without being overly showy."

The ensemble was lent extra dazzle witha smattering of vintage Fred Leighton jewels- 19th Century diamond teardrop pendant earrings and a rose-cut diamond cluster ring.Theaccessories also flew the Brit flag, withsilver lamestrappy pearl sandals by Nicholas Kirkwood and a silver Jimmy Choo box clutch finishing the look.

This is Foy"s first time at the Golden Globes so how did Yates approach the occasion?"The Golden Globes is a big deal.A nomination puts an actress intothe spotlight, where what she wears is scrutinised by a global audience," she emphasises."So, as a stylist, it???s definitely something you want to get right. My priority with Claire wasalways what will make her look andfeelamazing on the night. That was whatwas driving our choices rather than what the latest trends are."

As soon as Foy was nominated, Yates began to put the wheels in motion for last night"s look."Istarted speaking to designers including Erdem. We chatted about ideas, he sentacouple of sketches - which wereincredible - and, within a week, we were in his studio havingthe first fitting. The fittings continuedover the Christmasperiod and the last one occurred on the set ofThe Crownthe day before Claire flew out to LA.She was in full Queen hair and makeup that day which was slightly distracting!"

Foypaid tribute to the Her Majesty as she collected her award, saying that she has been"at the centre of the world" for more than 60 years. Her role as the somewhat buttoned-up, protocol-following monarch also influenced the look she and Yates wanted to evoke for awards season."Claire wears a lot of classic gowns in the show so she???s keen to experiment more with redcarpet looks."

It"s not just the Golden Globes red carpet which Yates had to prepare for as Foy has been out and about in L.A at the various partieswhich act as warm-ups for the ceremony."There were a few guiding principles," she says of how she strategised the week."First, Claire had to look and feel great at all times, whateverthe event.Second, I reallywanted to flythe flag for British designers. There are so many brilliant home grown designers and as the show is so British it felt like a great opportunity to do this. She adores clothes and she"s not afraid to try new things, so I was keen forthe looks to express her interest in fashion."

Two of the standout looks were a modern black jumpsuit by Roksanda- "the bow detailed sleeves gave afeminine nod to the masculine silhouette of a jumpsuit"-and a brightly patterned dress by Duro Olowu- "I love his prints. He creates classic silhouettes with bold playful patterns."

Both actedasplayful but polishedantidotes to tonight"s grandeur Yates reasons."It was an opportunity to do something other than classic gowns given that The Crown is full of gowns and the Golden Globes was certainly going to be a gown. These looks were a chance to explore different expressions of her personal style."
