Fortnum's Biggest Profits In 300 Years

FORTNUM & MASON looks set to announce the biggest profits in its 306-year history after a particularly merry Christmas season, thanks - at least in part - to a hamper renaissance.Record numbers of the store's famous baskets of treats were delivered this season, with truffles, Turkish delight and mince pies in particular proving popular.

"Christmas at Fortnum's was one of the best yet," the store's chief executive Ewan Venters told the Evening Standard."The demand for more luxurious bespoke items, together with the Christmas staples, is at an all-time high, suggesting that consumers still want to treat themselves during the festive period."

The store sold 200,000 of its trademark hampers last year - including three of its premium Imperial hampers, at a cost of £5,000 each - helping the store to a pre-tax profit of £1.8 million, an incredible fivefold increase on 2012.

The store opened its first ever standalone away from Piccadilly this year, inside St Pancras station, and also launched "stocking filler" tables for the festive season bearing easy-to-shop small items such as mini bottles of port and pots of jam.
