Weinstein Confirms Charles James Relaunch

FASHION rumours often prove to be unfounded, but in the case of the rebirth of the Charles James label - mooted yesterday - the whispers were right on track.Movie mogul Harvey Weinstein's company today confirmed that it has "agreed to license, with an option to buy, luxury fashion brand Charles James from the iconic designer's estate".

"Charles James was one of the most incredible couturiers in the history of fashion and this label deserves to be a household name in the same ranks as Chanel, Dior and Oscar de la Renta," Weinstein said today."There isn't a single designer in high fashion who wouldn't name him as a major influence. We are beyond thrilled to be spearheading the revival of this brand and bringing it back to the world's finest retailers."

James - whose work will be celebrated by an exhibition at New York's Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art this year, which kicked off with last night's Met Ball - was a 20th-century couturier, gaining fame in America in the Forties for his pragmatic designs. One piece, named the Taxi Dress, allowed his busy customers to get dressed for an event in the back of a cab should the need arise.

"Charles James designs and gowns took everyone's breath away at the Met Ball," Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman - who is also Weinstein's wife, and will act as creative consultant for the brand - added."He's long been an inspiration to me and everyone at Marchesa. We're thrilled to help bring the Met exhibit to museums around the country and to bring the spirit and style of Charles James back in to the fashion marketplace."

The brand's release also revealed that following its Met moment, the exhibition may travel to "other major cities".The museum's 2011 exhibition Alexander McQueen:Savage Beauty will open at London's V&A next year.
