It'S been a stellar year for British singer Sam Smith, with an appearance in the Balenciaga campaign adding to his *Vogue * Today I'm Wearing appearance in the fashion portion of his CV, and now he's taking on the James Bond theme, it was confirmed this morning.

Yesterday, Smith teased his Instagram followers by posting a photograph of his hand sporting a ring with a small engraving, and Bond fans were quick to recognise it as the symbol for Spectre (the "Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion") - the motif that first hit screens in the 1962 film Dr No. The name of the song was revealed this morning as Writing's On The Wall.

"This is one of the highlights of my career," Smith told the BBC this morning."I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations...Igot called into the office with Barbara Broccoli and Sam Mendes and they gave me the script to read. They said, 'Have a go at the song.'It's the quickest I've ever written a song - it took 20 minutes and they loved it!"

Following in the footsteps of fellow Brit Adele, who recorded the theme song for Bond's last outing, Skyfall, Smith's recording is the first James Bond theme song recorded by a British male solo artist since 1965 - and will lead the film when it's released on October 26.
