Stella McCartney on worrying what the nation thinks and transcendental meditation

Poised on high black stilettos, in navy trousers and luxurious ivory satin shirt, tamarillo-red coat (all own brand obviously) draped from her shoulders like a cloak, Stella McCartney is posing by a giant coat of arms, surrounded respectfully by a flock of young British Olympians.

Presenting her new kit collection for Team GB, ahead of Rio 2016, which begins in 100 days" time, McCartney is so imperious - like a modern-day Calpurnia - that it seems utterly appropriate she is flanked by stars like Jessica Ennis-Hill, Olivia Breen, Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee, and Laura Trott, forming a sort of trainer-wearing Praetorian Guard.

Indeed McCartney???s regal presence even draws the eye away from the nation???s favourite diver Tom Daley. And this despite Daley being clad in trunks which are as teeny on the hanger as off, measuring about two inches at their shortest seam (causing him to remark yes ???my trunksarequite small???)

???I worry about what the athletes think of course, but that goes hand to hand with what the nation thinks???From Queen of Fashion to Queen of the Olympics

Yet if McCartney has segued easily from Queen of Fashion to Queen of the Olympics, she is quite down-to-earth in the flesh, touchingly concerned how her designs for Team GB will be received.??????It is so hard to really read people???s reactions,?????? she says, backstage, sipping water, and laughing.??????Hopefully, they will be polite to me.

??????I worry about what the athletes think of course, but that goes hand to hand with what the nation thinks.??????

In 2012, initial reaction to her first Olympic kit was mixed, with some of the public taking exception to the lack of red in the union flag design and muttering about Too Much Grey. This time round, the designs already seem to be more popular, and - in case you???re worried - there is plenty of red, white and blue. The only grey in the range seems to be reserved for a vest top - which is so baby-bottom soft that no-one will care about the hue.

Certainly not our Olympians who seem to be hugely enthusiastic about all their new gear.McCartney admits:??????They love it; they tell me they feel time and love and consideration has gone into it, and they appreciate that the fit is even better.??????

Making the Olympic kit more feminine

One of the challenges of the new kit was that sponsors Adidas were aiming to make it 10 per cent lighter than before, sotherewere strange new fabrics to incorporate. But McCartney was also keen it would fulfil other requests, like allowing the women athletes to feel more feminine. Most teams, she explains, have a unisex uniform, but she wanted to design clothes that flattered and had a slim fit for women where appropriate.

This ties in with McCartney"s signature pared-back but wearable designs for her catwalkcollections, which are driven she explains by a desire to serve and connect with the women who are her customers.

??????These are the things I bring to the occasion,?????? says the designer.??????I fight the athletes??? corner.I want the best quality fabrics, but also insist on little details like two way zips. You are tightly governed by what various sport governing bodies allow, but I try to navigate around that so make the athletes feel better. You have to find a balance.??????

Browsing the rails, this means a classy dark blue swimming costume for sprinting past Australians, bright patriotic tracksuits for rostrum duty, but also a cosy Onesie for trawling the athletes??? village when you are too happy to sleep.

On creating a coat of arms

How did McCartney find new inspiration this time round???????I felt it was really important to create a coat of arms to draw on our heritage, something we could gift to the British Olympic Association and British Paralympic Association.??????The armourial design is deliberately focused on unifying the nation with its entwining national flowers from the different countries, and paired blue and red lions rampant, joining up the Olympic and Paralympic teams. The gold, silver and bronze medals on top represent the past as well as future intentions.

???The Olympics is so special; it brings us together as a nation???

The coat of arms - sometimes in outline, sometimes blocked in - is present across the Kit, but the union flag is everywhere too, and the letters GB more graphic and bold than formerly.??????I wanted to make it sporty and bold, to dissect the various elements and spread them across some items, and then bring them back together for others.??????

She adds:??????There were so many points of inspiration - I really wanted to deliver on my role. The Olympics is so special; it brings us together as a nation.??????

On being proud of the young athletes

Working with 600 athletes, some have inevitably become friends, although she resolutely will not tell The Telegraph who she likes best.Sounding a little like Sir Bruce Forsyth, she says ??????They are all my favourites??????.Although she does let slip that she misses retired Olympians Victoria Pendleton and Chris Hoy.

Does she feel maternal towards the young competitors at their first Games?"Some are babies, with their futures still to be determined, cooking up something for the next time.

??????But I do feel an emotional connection to those doing it again. You can???t help but feel proud of them, especially when you learn how hard they train and some of them with little funding in God knows what conditions.??????

Stella"s sport of choice

So, utilising a magic wand, what would be her Olympic discipline???????Ooh, equestrian, no, swimming - no equestrian, definitely - a bit of dressage.Actually I???d love to do most of them - rowing, even javelin.Though perhaps not discus.I???m not sure that would be my thing.??????She laughs and mocks holding a heavy object under her chin.

What sport does she actually enjoy???????I do a bit of everything.I ride, I swim, run, dance, do a bit of yoga, pilates, so I am active, But not like these guys, my mind doesn???t work the same way.

??????So it is fascinating to get into their way of thinking. One of the female athletes - she blows me away by how she fine tunes her body. She has this connection between mind and body, so she can feel the slightest change in a muscle in her ankle.

The perfectionist"s perfectionist

??????Now this is not how I work. But when I walk into a room, I might notice a tiny speck of blue tack in the highest corner of the room.My visual mind is different to most people???s.??????

I???m not sure she is as different to the Olympians as she protests.McCartney, 44, is notorious for being a hard worker and for pole-vault-high standards - probably as much as any gold medallist.Even the room in which we meet, a cordoned off section of a municipal sports centre, has been carefully dressed - with a pale blue sofa and chair, a white fluffy rug and a scented candle. In a profession noted for obsessives, McCartney has a name for being the perfectionist???s perfectionist.

???My mum used to say - and this really resonates with me:???It???s allowed???

How then, given that apart from running her global eponymous fashion brand, she is also mother to two girls and two boys withhusband Hunter creative directorAlasdhair Willis, does McCartney keep her cool?

??????It???s about finding that balance between work, family, and self,?????? she says, before insisting, ??????But I don???t always tick those boxes.I do meditate - but I???m not really at20-minutes-a-day of TM [transcendental meditation], I???m not there yet.??????

Perhaps she is more lenient with herself than first appears - "My mum used to say - and this really resonates with me:???It???s allowed.???

"So I think:I don???t meditate for 20 mins twice a day? It???s allowed. It???s allowed to feel stressed. It???s allowed to feel sad.You are allowed to let yourself off the hook.??????

Although, not - if you are called Jessica, Olivia, Jonathan or Tom - until September.Please.
